Physical Education at East Peckham Primary School
We thoroughly enjoy PE and promote the importance of the subject at East Peckham Primary School.
We are lucky enough to have our very own heated swimming pool! The swimming pool is usually open for lessons from Easter to October half term (depending on the weather) and the children are taught by a qualified swimming teacher in small groups. We teach the children water safety as well as how to swim. All children must wear swimming trunks/suit and a swimming hat. Children can only wear goggles if there is a letter from a doctor explaining that there is a medical reason. Teaching children confidence in the water is paramount and we feel children need to be able to cope with water even if they are not prepared.
We do our best to hold sporting events throughout the year to maintain the positive promotion of the subject such as inviting Olympic Athletes (Amy Smith - Swimmer) into the school for a day of keeping fit with the children, external sports coaching clubs (Hotshotz tennis) hold induction days and many more.
We hold our annual Sports Day in June where we see the school houses compete against each other to claim the House Cup. Throughout the year, inter-school competitions (hockey, football, netball, and other team sports) keep our children’s competitive nature ticking over in preparation for Sports Day.
The school has also invested in 5-a-day.tv. An online interactive website which promotes exercise and wellbeing through five minute dance workouts with some yoga and chillout activities. This allows us to keep children engaged, active and focus on their learning whilst remaining in the classroom.
Each class at East Peckham also takes time out in the week to do some yoga. Teachers and Teaching Assistants have undertaken relevant yoga training which allow them to hold yoga sessions with children throughout the week.
All these activities, resources and events allow us at East Peckham to provide a rounded and comprehensive PE curriculum to our children.
